Candy Bar
This style of phone is rectangular in shape with no flip design features. It was designed to have the feel of a real phone, both durable and nonsense free. The size ranges in both width and length depending on the model.

Flip/Clamshell
This style of phone has two parts, connected by a common hinge, which allows the user to close off the inner face when not in use; thus, the inner key functions and screen are protected.

Slide
This style of phone has two plates which slide apart with pressure, unveiling the inner screen and key functions. It is useful for people who don’t like flip phones, but still like the design of having two different interfaces.

Swivel
This style of phone is a lot like a flip phone, but instead of opening courtesy of a hinge, it has a hinge that allows the user to rotate the top face to the side and up, in order to expose the inner face.

Performance refers to the radio wave frequencies that allow us to hear the other person when talking on a cell phone. Frequency ranges are referred to as bands. For cell phones, the terms dual, tri and quad band are the most common and indicate the number of frequency ranges a specific phone possesses, and are described below:

Dual Band - A dual band phone will cover a person’s basic needs in the U.S., but it will not get service outside of the country. No less than a dual band is recommended, even though single bands will work in most states.

Tri Band - A tri band phone is the second best quality phone and will work in some countries outside of the U.S. International travelers may wish to purchase a quad band so they never have to research a country’s service capabilities in advance.

Quad Band - A phone with all four bands will work not only in the U.S., but also internationally; it is the best and most expensive of them all.

Some phones come with built-in modems for Web browsing and email while others come with wireless capabilities like a celluar phone connection. If the phone does not come with this feature, it is often possible to buy an add-on that allows for some of these capabilities.

Many phones come with music players already installed. If you would like to be able to listen to music on your phones, make sure the playable music format on your phone is the same as your music collection.
